Ikea is looking to expand in the U.S. but not in the way you might suspect.
The Swedish furniture and home goods retailer, known for its massive stores spanning more than 300,000 square feet, will open its first "city center" location ever, in New York's Upper East Side, on Monday.
Situated along a stretch of Third Avenue, home to Bloomingdale's, Home Depot and CB2, Ikea's first small-format shop is meant to serve as a "planning studio" for shoppers to pick out items they want delivered to their homes.
It will offer lower-priced shipping and delivery, in addition to assembly services, help with financing and a buy online, pick up in store option. On the lowest level of the three-story space, which spans about 17,000 square feet, Ikea has three private rooms and a handful of computer stations dedicated to design planning sessions that can be booked by customers by appointment.
Here's a look inside the new store.
When shoppers walk in, they're greeted by grids on the walls that map out possible design scenarios.
The walls of the store are filled with organizational pieces, from top to bottom, encouraging shoppers to think outside the box about using that space.
The store has a handful of prototype apartments, like this one of 333 square feet, mimicking the space shoppers probably have in New York.
Downstairs, in the planning area, shoppers can look at tiles, cabinetry and other materials to customize their spaces.

Amazon’s checkout-free stores are planning to accept customers’ cash

Amazon’s cashless stores are making preparations to accept cash.
Amazon Go launched in 2018 and uses an array of sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence technology to track what you put in your bag as you make your way around, with your selected items automatically charged to your Amazon account as you exit the store.
The shopping experience is super-simple, but there has been increasing criticism that the system discriminates against those without a bank account or smartphone, both of which are needed to shop at the high-tech store. A 2017 study categorized around 6.5 percent of U.S. households (about 8.4 million people) as unbanked.
News of the company’s move toward accepting cash at its Go stores came via a CNBC report on Wednesday, April 10, and was later confirmed by Amazon, though the company declined to offer details of a timeline for the rollout.
While the move to accept cash payments means Amazon would be able to open its Go stores in places where cashless outlets are banned, it’s likely to frustrate executives who had their sights set on offering a checkout-free experience for all of its shoppers.
It’ll also mean that Amazon, a company that’s been investing heavily in robot and A.I. technology to reduce its human workforce across its business, may need to employ more people to work at the registers — unless, of course, it installs self-checkout machines.
Adding such facilities also has the potential to create lines during busy periods, which could impact the shopping experience.
Seattle-based Amazon currently operates 10 Amazon Go sites across the U.S. — four in its home city, four in Chicago, and two in San Francisco, though it reportedly has plans to open as many as 3,000 stores by 2021.

British luxury retailer Fortnum & Mason is set to open a store and restaurant in Hong Kong this September.
Fortnum & Mason was founded in London's Piccadilly in 1707, and while it has expanded its international presence with small retail outlets, the Hong Kong location will be its first flagship store and restaurant outside of the U.K.
The new store will be situated in the heart of Hong Kong's $2.6 billion Victoria Dockside redevelopment. The move comes amid growing international demand for Fortnum's products, with the opening intended to complement existing retail partnerships across Asia.
The Hong Kong store will be a 7,000 square-foot space selling Fortnum's most popular products including tea, champagne and tea ware. A Fortnum's restaurant will be located upstairs above the retail space with views across the harbor.
